Bible
StudyIn the Reformed Church understanding of the Bible is central to who we are. We believe that God's Word can be found in the Bible, but we are most likely to discover what God is saying to us as a church when we read and explore the scriptures together. Our Church has two lively Bible Study Groups which meet weekly to explore the Bible passages (following the Revised Common Lectionary) which will be used in the following Sunday's Traditional Service. The format is simple; first we spend time to discuss the previous Sunday's service, asking questions, making comments and observations. Then we take time to read all the lectionary passages set for the following Sunday. After reading the passages we discuss as a group any links we find between them, before going into a more detailed study and discussion of one or two of the passages. Finally and most importantly, we ask the 'So What' question. What is the relevance of the readings to us, and what have we shared and discovered together? If we don't ask the 'So What' question, our study remains just an interesting exercise. If we dare to ask the question, God may speak to us and our lives will be changed!
Therefore the point of our groups is not simply to increase our
knowledge of the Bible, but to explore together its meaning
for our
lives, to be challenged and changed, and to learn more about
God.The life and health of our church is dependent on a healthy relationship with God's Word. Our groups are friendly, informal, and always open to new members. No prior knowledge of the Bible is required; our groups include every level of experience from the beginner to the theologically trained! One group meets on a Monday evening at church from 7.30 pm to 9-ish; the other on a Tuesday afternoon, also at church from 2.00 pm to 3.30-ish. We often get so involved that we lose track of time! Study GroupsDuring the season of Lent the five churches of Heald Green join together for a series of lenten study sessions.
