Social Activities

Heald Green United Reformed Church is a very sociable community church, with a wide choice of activities for all ages. To see activities and clubs just for younger ones, visit 'Children, Young People', on our menu.

Below is a list of activities for older people in our community, as well as our Activities Night, which is for all ages together.

Activities NightRummikubs

Wednesday evenings 7.30 pm - 10.00 pm is a club night evening suitable for all ages.  With games of Badminton and Table Tennis for the more active, while Snooker, Pool or Carpet Bowls provide gentler exercise. A wide variety of board games are also available for those who prefer to exercise the mind!

It's just a pound to join in the fun, and refreshments are also available if you work up a thirst.

Happy PlodderThe Pensioners' Plod

Once a month, we have a hike of about 3 - 4 miles for those who, shall we say, are past that immediate first flush of youth. We meet in the church car park and arrange cars informally for transport to our starting point. The route is chosen carefully, not just for suitability and scenic appeal, but also to include, as far as possible, a suitable establishment for our midday meal.

You don't have to belong to the church to join in, just meet in the church car park at 10 am on the dates listed below.

Walks arranged for 2008 (warning will be given of any alteration):-

Thursday 17th January (Lunch) Wednesday 16th July
Tuesday 12th February Thursday 14th August
Friday 21st March (Good Friday) Tuesday 9th September
Wednesday 16th April  Wednesday 15th October

RefreshmentsCoffee Morning (first Saturday in the month, 10.30 am)

On the 1st Saturday of each month a Coffee Morning is held at our church, in the church hall, from 10.30 am - 12.30 pm. It's a chance to meet friends old and new, enquire about our church or simply to enjoy the company for a while. There is no charge for any of the refreshments (though often people do wish to make a small donation) so no one should feel excluded.

And of course, all our hot drinks and many of our snacks are Fairtrade. Why? Because we believe they should be!

Columba Club (Ladies) (Tuesday evenings, 8.00 pm, fortnightly)

The Columba Club is a Ladies' Group which meets fortnightly on Tuesday evenings. There is no official membership, all ladies and friends being welcome, whether attending regularly or whenever the programme is of particular interest. We enjoy a varied programme of Speakers, Demonstrations and Club Nights, as well as an annual Christmas Dinner and a Summer Outing.

A small subscription is paid on attendance, to cover refreshments and professional Speakers' fees.

Afternoon Guild
(Wednesday afternoons, 2.30 pm, fortnightly)

The Afternoon Guild is a social gathering of older members of our community, open to men and women.

We meet at church on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in the month (excluding August) at 2.30 pm.

We have a variety of speakers for our entertainment, some serious but mostly for fun, but mainly we meet to enjoy each other's company and have a cuppa and a chat. New members are always welcome and being a member of the church is not required, but we do honour our Christian tradition by opening our meetings with a hymn and a prayer.

If you would like to join us, you will be most welcome.

Ladies' Circle (Ladies) (Monday afternoons, 2.30 pm, fortnightly)

The Ladies' Circle meets fortnightly on alternate Mondays. We enjoy a good chat during our meetings, but spend our time together supporting the work of St Ann's Hospice by making knitted blankets for the patients.

The Ladies' Circle is a friendly and informal group to which any new members are always most welcome.

Luncheon Club - by referral (Friday lunchtimes, 1.00 pm, fortnightly)

Luncheon ClubThe Luncheon Club is run by volunteers from our church and meets fortnightly in our church hall, catering for around 20 people. Unfortunately, places are limited, and therefore the membership of the club is by referral only, mainly those who are housebound or infirm. If you do know someone living in Heald Green who meets the criteria please do contact us with details of the person concerned.  If no space is available we can if you wish keep your contact details until we have a vacancy.

Volunteers from the church also provide transport for those who need it; members of the club are picked up to arrive by 12.30 pm, ready for lunch.
